Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar, has stormed the box office with a domestic gross of $440.5 million, making it the #25 highest grossing film of all time.

As with the first Avatar movie, adjusting this data into estimated actual ticket sales is a bit tricky. My first estimate of Avatar had it at more than 90 million tickets, putting it comfortably in the top twenty. My revision earlier this year made better account of the premium prices Avatar tickets are being sold at. The new number was 74.5 tickets, dropping it to the high-30s.

The Way of Water likewise has ticket prices higher than average.

A report from CNBC quotes industry analysis showing an average 3D ticket price of $16.50 and an average 2D ticket price of $12.50 for Avatar 2. And, it states that about half the ticket sales so far have been for 3D and half for 2D.

Taking all this into account, The Way of Water’s $440.5 million translates into an estimated 30.4 million tickets sold. spotting it somewhere outside the top 400.

But the film seems to have box office legs and it will likely climb before the run is over.
